‘When Things Start To Think’ - book by Neil Gershenfeld now online:
Neil Gershenfeld offers a readable tour of what the world will be like tomorrow as computers become invisible, such as wearable computers, nanotech implants, and interactive digital books with electronic ink.
Neil Gershenfeld
Professor Neil Gershenfeld leads the Physics and Media Group at the MIT Media Lab, and directs the Things That Think research consortium. His unique laboratory investigates the relationship between the content of information and its physical representation, from developing molecular computers (which led to the first experimental demonstration of a quantum computation), to smart furniture (seen in the Museum of Modern Art and used in automobile safety systems), to virtuosic musical instruments (including a cello for Yo-Yo Ma and a stage for the Flying Karamazov Brothers).
Author of the best-selling books "When Things Start To Think," "The Nature of Mathematical Modeling," and "The Physics of Information Technology," Dr. Gershenfeld has a BA in Physics with High Honors from Swarthmore College, a Ph.D. from Cornell University, was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard University Society of Fellows, and a member of the research staff at Bell Labs.

In the 6,527 days since the Tim Berners-Lee made the first web page we’ve gone from sharing computers to sharing links and now – sharing data with the semantic web.
Kevin Kelly from wired at the Web 2.0 Summit, Nov 5 – 7, 2008, in San Francisco, CA gives his impressionistic view of what he thinks we are all headed towards.
This video starts with a brief review, then at about the 3 minute point – the web as OS. During the next 6,000 days, we move from Web 2.0 into the Cloud. Information and data all moves into the database where it can be shared. If it can’t be shared it doesn’t count. What can we do with this new sharing world in the cloud? The extended self - where do we begin and where do we end?
What has happened during the past 6,500 days was impossible. We have to get better at believing in the impossible.
Are we on the way to a borderless world where people access, share, connect and create conversations, information, knowledge, and cultural objects and share them with the world?
Video – Kevin Kelley – Looking back 5,000 days, looking ahead 5,000 days
Postsingular – What will happen after the singularity?
“A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”

South Korean Professor Cho Jae-Phil of Hanyang University and his team have developed lithium batteries that are 90% more efficient than current models. You will be able to do stuff 8 times longer – cell phones, notebook computers, cameras, etc. They replaced the graphite in the batteries with three-dimensional porous silicon particles. Professor Jae-Phil has hinted at merging this technology with solar panels. For More Info: Hallyutech.net

Cool Earth Solar has announced their Solar Balloon technology – an inflatable plastic thin-film balloon (solar concentrator) that focuses sunlight onto a photovoltaic cell held at it’s focal point. This design produces 400 times the electricity as would be possible without the “solar concentrator”.
Cool Earth is constructing a power plant in Livermore, CA using this new technology. This plant is modest in size, 1.4 Megawatts, but if works as expected, Cool Earth will launch a full sized power plant next summer. The plastic for this concentrator only costs $2.00.

ATTENTION: All Bloggers and Podcasters!
Techcruch has announced the launch of the Blogger and Podcaster Media Network that will give small and medium-size bloggers and podcasters the opportunity to earn a nice income!
The Network is free to join and requires no long-term or exclusive commitment. The BPMN is a consortium of bloggers and related companies looking to help bloggers of all sizes effectively monetize their sites regardless of audience size. Bloggers worldwide have the same opportunity!
Register to join right now! Please enter my name – Kent Beatty - in the “Referred By” field. Then invite your friends and colleagues to register.
The Blogger and Podcaster Media Network (BPMN) is organizing thousands of small and medium-sized bloggers into a single entity with critical mass and providing a uniquely powerful promotional solution to bloggers. The BPMN will aggregate blogs and podcasts into one directory and sell space to advertisers. The BPMN projects to return 70% of net revenues to it’s members – no ads need to appear on the blogs themselves.
According to BPMN CEO Larry Genkin, “Beyond what they generate directly, members will also share in the revenue generated by bloggers and podcasters they’ve referred into the BPMN. On average, each member referred into the BPMN will yield the referring member $500 - $1,000 annually. With over 100 million bloggers worldwide and more than 170,000 being added daily, a six-figure income is truly within reach.”
The only two obligations are that each member agrees to link to The Blogger & Podcaster Guide and the the first $5 of earned commissions each month will go to The Blogger & Podcaster Network to help offset operating costs. Other than that, there are no costs to join and no exclusivity or cancellation requirements. Members may join any other network that serves their needs and may cancel membership in the BPMN at any time.
Other benefits include:
- All bloggers signing up by December 31, 2008 receive stock should the BPMN have a successful IPO or is acquired for for a large sum of money.
- Members will receive exclusive deals and promotions provided by BPMN partners. This will include $2,000.00 in services from PR Newswire, a powerful promotional service.
- Members will have access to healthcare coverage, enabling them to focus on their blogs/podcasts full-time while protecting their families.

On March 19, 2008, before the candidates were nominated, Mike Elgan wrote a column entitled “Has Digg Already Picked the President?” suggesting that social networks might be the best predictor of the outcome of the 2008 presidential election. He was right:
“At the time, I conducted an analysis that varied from site to site, and included Digg, MySpace and Facebook, to see which of the candidates the social sites preferred. I also suggested that if social sites ended up accurately predicting who would win, they might be taken seriously by future pundits when guesstimating who is likely to be elected in the future. Back then, as you can read in my article, SOCIAL SITES PREDICTED A LANDSLIDE BY OBAMA.”

EWA (Extraction of Water from Air) does just that by using a clean technology that extracts water from air, while using very little energy. The extraction occurs in three steps: first is the absorption of the air’s humidity, then the removal of the humidity from a solid dessicant (silica based gel granules, and third, condensation. According to EWA, one cubic kilometer of air contains from 10 to 40 thousand tons of water. Clean water is a luxury for most of the world. This technology may provide clean and safe water without pollution and without expensive piping and infrastructure.
