This is day #365 in 2009 and the last day of the aughts.
Tomorrow begins the second decade of the 21st Century and of the Third Millennium. 2010 will have 365 days, or 8,760 hours, or 525,600 seconds.
Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest:
The soul, uneasy and confin’d from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.
- Alexander Pope
We can’t manage or save time, it passes us right by. But we can do more with the time we have. Remember, you get what you accept, you go where you look, you are what you think - so, first things first, think of Jesus first, be thankful for every minute of every day and try to see the bright side of everything, even problems and crises have a silver lining and lessons to learn from and grow with.
You go where you look
and you get what you accept.
Living your life is like flying a flight or a mission. You plan your flight and fly your plan (of course you have to adjust to variables encountered, but stay with the plan)
Take time once in a while to overwhelm your senses.
Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s 99% small stuff. Unless someone is in danger of dying, don’t stress out. Keep everything in perspective. Enjoy life!
Sorry to sound so preachy, but I know that we all can do, endure and achieve much more than we realize. The answer to the unasked question and the result of the action not taken is no. Think, Ask and Do!
Thank God for now.
Wishing everyone a healthy, pleasing and prosperous new year!

What’s next? For one thing: Personal Branding. According to Chad Levitt, parts of the next wave of innovation will revolve around social networks, personal brands, massive amounts of data, collaboration and making senese of it all to create value. Also, expect more internal company social networking.

Team Hoyt – Dick & Rick Hoyt
Rick has cerebral palsy caused by loss of oxygen to his brain at birth because his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. Advised by Doctors to “put Rick away” because he would only be a “vegetable”, Dick and his wife Judy took Rick home and included him in all activities with their other two sons. Dick said that although Rick wasn’t able to speak or control his body you could see his awareness in his eyes and facial expressions.
At age 12, Rick gained the ability to communicate through a computer program called “the hope machine” developed by Tufts University. Rick could now painstakingly type words. His first words: “Go Bruins”. Since then Rick has completed both high school and college.
When Rick was in high school he heard of a five-mile charity road race for a paralyzed teenager. Rick told his Dad “I have to do somethin for him. I want to let him know that life goes on.” For Dick, who wasn’t a runner, this was a call to action. They ran that race together and came in next to last.
After that first race, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.”
Since then “Team Hoyt” (Dick is 66 and Rick is 44) has completed 60 marathons and 950 races. They are now doing Triathlons and Iron Man competitions. Dick pulls, pushes and carries Rick (110 pounds) to complete these competitions! Dick and Rick biked and ran across the United States in 1992, completing 3,735 miles in 45 days!

On Friday, September 4, 2009, I spent a couple of hours shooting photos of my son’s high school varsity football game. Just after half time I got a strange display in the viewfinder of my Nikon D-70. My new 4 GB Compact Flash card had been acting flaking lately, so I replaced it with the older 1 GB Compact Flash card that I’ve used for 4 years and continued shooting the game. When I put the 4 GB Compact Flash card in the card reader all I got on the screen was gibberish – couldn’t read any files.
I found some commercial programs that do a great job recovering files, but they were from $40.00 on up. I’m a tightwad on some things and enjoy the challenge of finding great software for free. After spending some time searching for a free program to use to recover those files I found a program called “Disk Digger” by Dmitry Brant.
Disk Digger is a data recovery utility that scans your media for traces of lost files (images, documents, etc.), and can undelete files from FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS partitions.
I’m not sure why, at this point, why the 4 GB compact flash card got messed up, but I am very thankful to Dmitry and Disk Digger!
How do I … recover lost data with DiskDigger?

Suryia the orangutan and Roscoe the blue tick hound became best friends upon meeting each other!
Both Suryia and (now) Roscoe live at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in Myrtle Beach, SC. This story just recently aired on "Oprah" and will be featured this fall on National Geographic Channel’s show "Odd Couples".
“As soon as he saw Roscoe, Suryia ran over to him and they started playing,” Bhagavan Antle, founder of TIGERS Antle told UK’s Daily Mail. “‘It was unusual because dogs are usually scared of primates but they took to each other straight away.”
“‘Roscoe looked really thin and a little lost so we fed him and took care of him … We made a few calls to see if he belonged to anyone and when no-one came forward, Roscoe ended up staying.”
Suryia, while helping to raise baby primates at the sanctuary, always takes some time to spend with Roscoe, swimming, rolling around in the grass, or going for walks.
“Suryia will take Roscoe for walks around the enclosure and even feeds him some of his monkey biscuits,” Antle said.

Genevieve Spencer
This is the story of a young lady who was a farm girl keeping a twitter-like diary in the 1930’s. David Griner, her great-nephew, is tweeting her ‘line-a-day diary’ at @Genny_Spencer. Most of the entries are pretty dry and sound almost monotonous yet taken altogether they have a sense of mystery. As David states at his blog:
Late last year, my family found a line-a-day diary maintained by my great-aunt from 1937 to 1941. She was in her early teens, living on a small farm in rural Illinois with her two brothers, one of which was my grandfather.
It’s a fascinating account of life in a bygone era, a time when my family’s only connections to the world were schoolhouse chatter and a neighbor’s radio.
Looking at the terse journal, my sister quipped, "This is the Twitter of the 1930s." We glanced at each other and almost immediately began planning the Twitter account that would become Twitter.com/Genny_Spencer.
I can trace my ancestors back to 1725, and their arrival in this country in 1750, but there are no photos until the late 19th century, and very little more until my grandfather. Future generations will have a tremendous amount of details about our lives, with progressively more of that information online. Genny’s diary on twitter gives us a glimpse of life 70 years ago during simpler times. Thank you David and Genny!
Genny’s brother Kerby, whom she mentions in her diary entries, served during WWII as a fighter pilot in the Pacific.
Genny Spencer was still living when David started tweeting her diary.
She passed away on February 26, 2009.
Thanks to @augustusgroop who tweeted on this story

"First 40 Follow" - a simple twitter strategy
If you have an established twitter account and a good bit of interesting updates, here is a way of having some great fun with Twitter and gaining relevant followers pretty quickly. This is not automated or rocket science … just basic human psychology. Nearly all twitter users have an INTENSE need to be NEEDED and also like to follow interesting twitterees … so this could be one way to grow your base. (In the last week I went from 150 to 420 followers, with I’d say about 60% or so of these new followers being relevant and interesting.)
1 - Find the people you consider to be your "go to" twitter followers or users you follow and that you like their stuff, i.e. they are like minded, in the same line of work, interesting, etc. etc., whatever your main criteria for judging twitter users are. Now, go to one of your "go to" user’s page using the standard twitter web viewer.
2 - Hit the person’s "FOLLOWERS" link.
(This displays the last twenty people that decided to follow this user, in the order they signed up)
3 - Scroll down to the bottom of the page, hit the "next" button.
(This displays the second to last twenty people that have chosen to follow this user, in the order they signed up)
4 - Now look at the number above, how many users does this person follow.
In this case 440.
Divide 440 by 20, that equals 22.
5 - Now lets go the the page that reveals the first users that decided to follow KentBeatty.
Take the number above, (rounded up if needed) 22 and put that number at the end of the URL address in the command line of the browser.
For example: http://twitter.com/KentBeatty/followers?page=22
(In this case, what you see now is the first 20 people that decided to follow this user. The first follower for this user was @chrisabraham)
I’ve found that in nearly every case, there is strong probability the first 40 or so users that follow a user are pretty similar in interest to that person you have an interest in … or they are a close friend or family member. These are the user’s early followers.
Follow these first 40 and see what happens.
6 - Now do the same thing for this user’s "FOLLOWING" list. Perhaps EVEN MORE TELLING … these are the users that this user decided to follow first when they first started their twitter account. Again, a strong probability that these users are very similar to your interests, in some cases they are the very reason this user originally bought into twitter. Follow these first 40 and see what happens. (I had to turn off my email notification of new followers, getting too many)
NOTE: The "First 40 Follow" strategy doesn’t seem to work on really huge numbers of followers, (anything above 10,000/20=500 as the URL page number ) not sure why … For example I tried to see who was the first follower of @aplusk but twitter would not pull up this page. I did see however the first user he followed was @kevinrose.
Put a little time into doing this and see a rapid increase in, not just quantity, but quality of your followers and those you choose to follow.
Good luck

William R. Forstchen’s book – One Second After – is a work of fiction, however it’s based on a very real possibility.
An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) over the U.S.A. could take out our entire electric power grid as well as kill or disable electrical devices. Any electrical devices that survive an EMP will be useless without a power grid and after batteries are exhausted. Pumps and distribution systems stop working. No water, no gas …
One way to protect against an EMP is to place objects in a Faraday Cage in order to cancel the effects of an electrical field.
All it takes to detonate a nuclear weapon over any country (including the U.S.A.) is one nuclear weapon and one Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM.) The two states which are first on the list as reckless enough to attempt a nuclear strike against us are Iran and North Korea. If a terrorist group ever gains control of ICBMs (i.e. Pakistan), they would be less restrained than a national government.
Let’s hope our Military can take out any missiles launched from rogue nations!
One deterrent is our fleet of ballistic missile submarines which can launch more than 250 missiles with over 1,000 nuclear warheads. Submerged SSBNs would not be effected by an EMP.

2 Minutes from Bird Strike to Splashdown
via: Erick Schonfeld at techcrunch
The computer animation in this video recreates the flight path and Hudson river landing of US Airways Flight 1549. Although the details of the story are by now familiar to nearly everyone—the plane hit a flock of geese, which took out the engines, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing on the Hudson, saving the lives of everyone on board—the animation captures the sequence of events in an extremely precise way. The animation is timed to the audio track from the traffic control towers, which really shows how little time there was for the pilot to act. The incident from strike to landing takes about two minutes (the audio has been edited a bit down from its original runtime of around four minutes).
The video was discovered by Erick Schonfeld : video on Facebook
, after it was posted there by Pejman Nozad.
Fortune’s David Kirkpatrick, shared the video on Facebook.

A good friend of mine, Charlotte, recently decided to break up with her boyfriend of almost one year, well sort of. Charlotte met Stan through a coworker. And while Stan wasn’t on paper her “ideal” match, there was a connection. They soon entered into a committed relationship. While the beginning was full of butterflies in her stomach and excitement when she saw him, she soon realized something wasn’t quite right. Stan started showing up late for their dates and sometimes cancelling them altogether, even at the last minute. When she started feeling neglected by his actions, she began wondering if he really wanted to be in a relationship with her or not. When she confronted him with her concerns, he would say things about how busy he was or how he had all these other commitments in his life (i.e., work, caring for his elderly mother, taking care of his house, etc.). While these were legitimate responsibilities, Stan was not making his relationship with Charlotte a priority. She was always the one to get pushed aside if other commitments became overwhelming.
Eventually, Charlotte would tire of being pushed aside. Once she became angry with his behavior, she would stop returning his phone calls or would push him to break up with her. Either option resulted in a break up … but only for a short time. A few weeks, maybe a month or two, would pass and one of them would reach out to the other. Both would apologize and say that they missed each other, although the issues regarding the break up would never truly be addressed. But they would get back together and all would be great … at first. It didn’t take long for the old issues to resurface and another break up occur.![]()
Charlotte broke off the relationship more than once,

Can cause even the most confident man or woman to launch into a panic attack or become a nervous mess. And after sharing some worst first date stories with my co-workers at lunch the other day, it’s no wonder. Going around the table, there was no shortage of funny, awful, and painful (literally) first date stories. Here are a just a few.
One co-worker shared a story about a friend of hers. Her friend was into modeling and often spent her summers in Miami. After meeting a handsome Italian man one day, she was thrilled when he asked her on a date. He said he knew a cute little place and pronounced the name of it sexily in his thick accent. She graciously accepted. Expecting to go out to one of Miami’s finest eateries, she dolled herself up in a nice evening dress, hair done up just right and killer accessories. Her Italian date showed up right on time. He proceeded to escort her to the cute little restaurant he told her about … Subway. She was mortified to have dressed up for a 6 inch sandwich.
Another co-worker recalled her first date with a boy in her high school that she had been crushing after for years. She was so excited about getting asked out by him that she went overboard with her dress as well. She put on her nicest outfit … even though they were
