Suryia the orangutan and Roscoe the blue tick hound became best friends upon meeting each other!
Both Suryia and (now) Roscoe live at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in Myrtle Beach, SC. This story just recently aired on "Oprah" and will be featured this fall on National Geographic Channel’s show "Odd Couples".
“As soon as he saw Roscoe, Suryia ran over to him and they started playing,” Bhagavan Antle, founder of TIGERS Antle told UK’s Daily Mail. “‘It was unusual because dogs are usually scared of primates but they took to each other straight away.”
“‘Roscoe looked really thin and a little lost so we fed him and took care of him … We made a few calls to see if he belonged to anyone and when no-one came forward, Roscoe ended up staying.”
Suryia, while helping to raise baby primates at the sanctuary, always takes some time to spend with Roscoe, swimming, rolling around in the grass, or going for walks.
“Suryia will take Roscoe for walks around the enclosure and even feeds him some of his monkey biscuits,” Antle said.

Genevieve Spencer
This is the story of a young lady who was a farm girl keeping a twitter-like diary in the 1930’s. David Griner, her great-nephew, is tweeting her ‘line-a-day diary’ at @Genny_Spencer. Most of the entries are pretty dry and sound almost monotonous yet taken altogether they have a sense of mystery. As David states at his blog:
Late last year, my family found a line-a-day diary maintained by my great-aunt from 1937 to 1941. She was in her early teens, living on a small farm in rural Illinois with her two brothers, one of which was my grandfather.
It’s a fascinating account of life in a bygone era, a time when my family’s only connections to the world were schoolhouse chatter and a neighbor’s radio.
Looking at the terse journal, my sister quipped, "This is the Twitter of the 1930s." We glanced at each other and almost immediately began planning the Twitter account that would become Twitter.com/Genny_Spencer.
I can trace my ancestors back to 1725, and their arrival in this country in 1750, but there are no photos until the late 19th century, and very little more until my grandfather. Future generations will have a tremendous amount of details about our lives, with progressively more of that information online. Genny’s diary on twitter gives us a glimpse of life 70 years ago during simpler times. Thank you David and Genny!
Genny’s brother Kerby, whom she mentions in her diary entries, served during WWII as a fighter pilot in the Pacific.
Genny Spencer was still living when David started tweeting her diary.
She passed away on February 26, 2009.
Thanks to @augustusgroop who tweeted on this story

"First 40 Follow" - a simple twitter strategy
If you have an established twitter account and a good bit of interesting updates, here is a way of having some great fun with Twitter and gaining relevant followers pretty quickly. This is not automated or rocket science … just basic human psychology. Nearly all twitter users have an INTENSE need to be NEEDED and also like to follow interesting twitterees … so this could be one way to grow your base. (In the last week I went from 150 to 420 followers, with I’d say about 60% or so of these new followers being relevant and interesting.)
1 - Find the people you consider to be your "go to" twitter followers or users you follow and that you like their stuff, i.e. they are like minded, in the same line of work, interesting, etc. etc., whatever your main criteria for judging twitter users are. Now, go to one of your "go to" user’s page using the standard twitter web viewer.
2 - Hit the person’s "FOLLOWERS" link.
(This displays the last twenty people that decided to follow this user, in the order they signed up)
3 - Scroll down to the bottom of the page, hit the "next" button.
(This displays the second to last twenty people that have chosen to follow this user, in the order they signed up)
4 - Now look at the number above, how many users does this person follow.
In this case 440.
Divide 440 by 20, that equals 22.
5 - Now lets go the the page that reveals the first users that decided to follow KentBeatty.
Take the number above, (rounded up if needed) 22 and put that number at the end of the URL address in the command line of the browser.
For example: http://twitter.com/KentBeatty/followers?page=22
(In this case, what you see now is the first 20 people that decided to follow this user. The first follower for this user was @chrisabraham)
I’ve found that in nearly every case, there is strong probability the first 40 or so users that follow a user are pretty similar in interest to that person you have an interest in … or they are a close friend or family member. These are the user’s early followers.
Follow these first 40 and see what happens.
6 - Now do the same thing for this user’s "FOLLOWING" list. Perhaps EVEN MORE TELLING … these are the users that this user decided to follow first when they first started their twitter account. Again, a strong probability that these users are very similar to your interests, in some cases they are the very reason this user originally bought into twitter. Follow these first 40 and see what happens. (I had to turn off my email notification of new followers, getting too many)
NOTE: The "First 40 Follow" strategy doesn’t seem to work on really huge numbers of followers, (anything above 10,000/20=500 as the URL page number ) not sure why … For example I tried to see who was the first follower of @aplusk but twitter would not pull up this page. I did see however the first user he followed was @kevinrose.
Put a little time into doing this and see a rapid increase in, not just quantity, but quality of your followers and those you choose to follow.
Good luck

William R. Forstchen’s book – One Second After – is a work of fiction, however it’s based on a very real possibility.
An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) over the U.S.A. could take out our entire electric power grid as well as kill or disable electrical devices. Any electrical devices that survive an EMP will be useless without a power grid and after batteries are exhausted. Pumps and distribution systems stop working. No water, no gas …
One way to protect against an EMP is to place objects in a Faraday Cage in order to cancel the effects of an electrical field.
All it takes to detonate a nuclear weapon over any country (including the U.S.A.) is one nuclear weapon and one Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM.) The two states which are first on the list as reckless enough to attempt a nuclear strike against us are Iran and North Korea. If a terrorist group ever gains control of ICBMs (i.e. Pakistan), they would be less restrained than a national government.
Let’s hope our Military can take out any missiles launched from rogue nations!
One deterrent is our fleet of ballistic missile submarines which can launch more than 250 missiles with over 1,000 nuclear warheads. Submerged SSBNs would not be effected by an EMP.

2 Minutes from Bird Strike to Splashdown
via: Erick Schonfeld at techcrunch
The computer animation in this video recreates the flight path and Hudson river landing of US Airways Flight 1549. Although the details of the story are by now familiar to nearly everyone—the plane hit a flock of geese, which took out the engines, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing on the Hudson, saving the lives of everyone on board—the animation captures the sequence of events in an extremely precise way. The animation is timed to the audio track from the traffic control towers, which really shows how little time there was for the pilot to act. The incident from strike to landing takes about two minutes (the audio has been edited a bit down from its original runtime of around four minutes).
The video was discovered by Erick Schonfeld : video on Facebook
, after it was posted there by Pejman Nozad.
Fortune’s David Kirkpatrick, shared the video on Facebook.

A good friend of mine, Charlotte, recently decided to break up with her boyfriend of almost one year, well sort of. Charlotte met Stan through a coworker. And while Stan wasn’t on paper her “ideal” match, there was a connection. They soon entered into a committed relationship. While the beginning was full of butterflies in her stomach and excitement when she saw him, she soon realized something wasn’t quite right. Stan started showing up late for their dates and sometimes cancelling them altogether, even at the last minute. When she started feeling neglected by his actions, she began wondering if he really wanted to be in a relationship with her or not. When she confronted him with her concerns, he would say things about how busy he was or how he had all these other commitments in his life (i.e., work, caring for his elderly mother, taking care of his house, etc.). While these were legitimate responsibilities, Stan was not making his relationship with Charlotte a priority. She was always the one to get pushed aside if other commitments became overwhelming.
Eventually, Charlotte would tire of being pushed aside. Once she became angry with his behavior, she would stop returning his phone calls or would push him to break up with her. Either option resulted in a break up … but only for a short time. A few weeks, maybe a month or two, would pass and one of them would reach out to the other. Both would apologize and say that they missed each other, although the issues regarding the break up would never truly be addressed. But they would get back together and all would be great … at first. It didn’t take long for the old issues to resurface and another break up occur.![]()
Charlotte broke off the relationship more than once,

Can cause even the most confident man or woman to launch into a panic attack or become a nervous mess. And after sharing some worst first date stories with my co-workers at lunch the other day, it’s no wonder. Going around the table, there was no shortage of funny, awful, and painful (literally) first date stories. Here are a just a few.
One co-worker shared a story about a friend of hers. Her friend was into modeling and often spent her summers in Miami. After meeting a handsome Italian man one day, she was thrilled when he asked her on a date. He said he knew a cute little place and pronounced the name of it sexily in his thick accent. She graciously accepted. Expecting to go out to one of Miami’s finest eateries, she dolled herself up in a nice evening dress, hair done up just right and killer accessories. Her Italian date showed up right on time. He proceeded to escort her to the cute little restaurant he told her about … Subway. She was mortified to have dressed up for a 6 inch sandwich.
Another co-worker recalled her first date with a boy in her high school that she had been crushing after for years. She was so excited about getting asked out by him that she went overboard with her dress as well. She put on her nicest outfit … even though they were

The red glow of warm adapter plugs shows they keep using power even when the appliances they’re connected to are turned off —as much in a year, in some cases, as the appliances themselves.
Today’s internal combustion engines are inefficient at converting fuel to motion. Cars waste up to 85 percent of the energy from the fuel in their tanks, losing a big chunk as heat.

I am not a “sky is falling” global warming alarmist, however I do believe we could use less energy by making energy conservation a priority and developing alternatives to oil and gas, i.e. electricity powered cars. We must reduce our dependence on oil.
This from the blog Amplified Green:
European researchers say they have begun to develop fridges that are powered by a 100% alloy which will reduce their energy usage by 50%. In the last 15 years, fridge technology developers have had to consider what option would be the lesser of two evils. Environmentalists alerted them to the harmful side effects of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the refrigerant chemical, but alternative refrigerants require a lot more energy.

FACT: Chimps often exhibit aggressive behavior, use lethal force and do eat meat
On Monday, February 16th, Travis the Chimp suddenly attacked and mauled 55 year old woman. The and chewed off both her hands. The Chimp’s owner, Sandra Herold, stabbed Travis with a butcher knife and struck him with a shovel in an attempt to get him off of Charla Nash. After critically injuring Charla, the chimp ran off, but then returned and was met by Policemen who shot him dead.
Fifteen year old Travis the chimp was raised like a child by his human family. He had a great life dining on steak, lobster and ice cream. He could brush his teeth with a Water Pik as well as bathe and dress himself. However, jungle animals do not belong in close contact with humans. Coleen McCann who is a primatologist at the Bronx Zoo stated that chimpanzees are unpredictable and dangerous even after living among humans. How dangerous? Ask the woman without a face:

Charla Nash underwent more than seven hours of surgery to repair the horrific injuries to her face and hands by four teams of surgeons in Stamford, CT. Ms. Nash’s injuries were so terrible that the hospital has begun offering counseling to staff members who treated her.

Man Eater - Frodo the Chimp
Frodo the Chimp kidnapped and ate human baby girl
From National Georgraphic
(On May 15, 2002) The trio had just crossed a dry streambed when they surprised Frodo feeding on oil-palm fronds only 12 feet (4 meters) from the path. As the spouse of a park employee, the mother probably knew that park rules bar children under 12 from visiting the park, and she almost certainly was aware of the mortal danger posed by chimps. Her shock and terror must therefore have been unimaginably extreme as she watched the 121-pound (54-kilogram) Frodo draw near, wrest the baby girl from the niece’s back, and disappear into the forest.
By the time help arrived from the research team, Frodo had scrambled up a tree and was holding the limp form of the baby, which he had begun to eat. Lacking the defensive support that the larger group would have lent him, Frodo was easily scared off, and the baby girl’s dead body was recovered. - Frodo The Alpha Male Chimp

Felix Mendelssohn was born on February 3, 1809
200 years ago today
He was a childhood prodigy whose work includes symphonies, concerti, oratorios, piano and chamber music.
Johanna Maria Lind (born October 6, 1820), better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish opera singer who was also known as “The Swedish Nightingale”. She was one of the best and most highly regarded opera singers in the 19th century.
Mendelssohn first met Jenny Lind on October 21, 1844. At that time she was 24. Mendelssohn and Lind “developed feelings” for each other, but he was married. Clive Brown’s book, A Portrait of Mendelssohn, mentions papers that tend to substantiate the notion of an affair with Lind.
In 1847 Mendelssohn declared his love for Jenny Lind and begged her in a letter to elope with him to America, threatening suicide if she refused. Lind did refuse and a few months later Mendelssohn was dead. His family reported that he had suffered a series of strokes (at the age of 38.) The letter is mentioned in an unreleased affadavit held by the Mendelssohn Scholarship Foundation. This affadavit was sealed from the time it was lodged by Lind’s husband, Otto Gokldschmidt, in 1896 until recently. Though unsealed, it is maintained as unreleased.
After Jenny Lind’s rejection, his extremely tormented F minor String Quartet was is last major work. The cellist Steven Isserlis, who is related to Mendelssohn, said, "Everyone loves to think of him as the happy, fulfilled composer. But there’s a tragic side to his late works. I think he experienced a fundamental shift of personality in that last year."
Mendelssohn left unfinished an opera, Lorelei, based on the legend of the Lorelei Rhine maidens, that he wrote for Jenny. Legend has it that Loreley, a beautiful young maiden, committed suicide because of an unfaithful lover by jumping from a steep rock into the Rhein river. She then became a siren and used her hypnotic voice to lure shipmen to their doom in the strong current and rocks below the water line.
After Mendelssohn’s death Jenny Lind wrote, “[He was] the only person who brought fulfillment to my spirit, and almost as soon as I found him I lost him again."
Those with sharp wits realize that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the greatest films ever made.
From Wikipedia:
2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick, written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. The film deals with thematic elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life, and is notable for its scientific realism, pioneering special effects, ambiguous and often surreal imagery, sound in place of traditional narrative techniques, and minimal use of dialogue.
Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, 2001: A Space Odyssey is today recognized by many critics and audiences as one of the greatest films ever made; the 2002 Sight & Sound poll of critics ranked it among the top ten films of all time.[1] It was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received one for visual effects. In 1991, it was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry.
