Piracy on the High Seas Today
Maritime piracy has seen a resurgence in the past decade – attacks are up 400% since 1992. John S. Burnett, who was robbed by pirates while sailing his boat off the coast of Indonesia in 1992, has researched and written an informative book on modern day piracy.
UPDATE – Oct 12, 2008:
AP, Oct 12, 2008, 10:16 a.m. – Pirates who are still holding the Ukrainian ship MV Faina which they seized two weeks ago in the waters near Mogadishu, Somalia, have set a deadline of next Tuesday to either receive the ransom of USD $20 million or they will destroy the ship and it’s cargo of 33 T-72 main battle tanks and other heavy weapons. It is feared that the tanks and heavy weapons could end up in the hands of Islamic militants in Somalia.
MV Faina
From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Carrier Strike Group 7 – San Diego based destroyer USS Howard is on station and in visual range of MV Faina, which is anchored off the Somalia coast near the city of Hobyo along with two other pirated vessels. The Howard is part of the Ronald Reagan Strike Group conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO.)
