Jesse Thomas of award-winning creative agency Jess3 has been working through an infographic challenge: trying to accurately depict the size of the key players in the geo / social space and has created a handy visual of the size of the internet’s behemoths—including Skype, Facebook, Yahoo Mail—and new tech companies on the scene like Foursquare and BrightKite. The infographic also includes a visualization of each company’s proportion of users who access the service through a mobile gadget.

The Rise of Social Networks

This infographic spans the timeline from 1995 up until today. The really large social networks exploded into existence during the 2003 – 2006 period:
What’s next? For one thing: Personal Branding. According to Chad Levitt, parts of the next wave of innovation will revolve around social networks, personal brands, massive amounts of data, collaboration and making senese of it all to create value. Also, expect more internal company social networking.

Popular Global Social Networks

Facebook is Number 1 Globally but MySpace is still most popular in the United States. Pingdom.com used Google Insights for Search to compare search volume comparisons across global regions and thereby assess Social Network popularity. They looked at the google data to see where the 12 top social networks are most popular. The social networks in this survey were MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Friendster, LinkedIn, Orkut, Last.fm, LiveJournal, Xanga, Bebo, Imeem and Twitter. Social networking is obviously global. Interestingly, certain social networks are popular in some countries but not in others. Is this due to marketing, demographics, cultural preferences?
